Shamanism is an ancient system of beliefs and practices that people from many different cultures have used to understand life and to heal. Shamans were the healers within a tribe or village, incorporating elements from nature and rituals to create change. Today, the practice of applied shamanism (as taught by Isa Gucciardi, Ph.D. at the Foundation of the Sacred Stream) draws from techniques common to all shamanic cultural practices, and applies them to our modern society.

In Shamanic Counseling, the main focus is to connect fully to our true nature and to create our lives with conscious intention. Many of the techniques used during healing encourage awareness and understanding of our inner world. The landscape of our inner world can govern our outer world; and the more information we can gain about our inner world, from a situation or experience, the more power we have to make life-affirming choices.

One of the main shamanic techniques used to explore and understand our inner landscape is the Shamanic Journey. Similar to an interactive form of meditation, the Shamanic Journey offers a dependable method of obtaining information and wisdom from our inner experience; it creates a doorway into other levels of our conscious experience. In a Shamanic worldview, there is an unseen world operating beyond the physical realm and this world offers a wealth of resources, support, guidance, and healing. This expansion in awareness, to include our unseen experiences, can allow for a richer relationship to life, more direct access to our intuition, clarity, and help with problem solving.
